Attendance

Attendance Information

At El Cerrito Middle School, we know that regular attendance is one of the most important factors in student success. If your child is absent, please contact our Attendance Office as soon as possible so we can accurately record the reason for the absence.

Our attendance line is available 24 hours a day. Please remember that absences must be cleared within 10 school days. After 10 days, the absence will automatically be recorded as unexcused (truancy) in accordance with California Education Code and CNUSD policy.

Excused Absences

A student may be excused from school for the following reasons:

  • Personal illness
  • Quarantine directed by a county or city health officer
  • Medical, dental, optometric, or chiropractic appointments
  • Funeral services for an immediate family member (up to one day in California and up to three days outside California)
  • Jury duty as provided by law
  • Illness or medical appointments of a child for whom the student is the custodial parent
  • Approved personal reasons, including:
    • Court appearances
    • Religious holidays, ceremonies, or retreats
    • Employment conferences
    • Other approved circumstances requested in writing and approved by administration
  • Service as a member of a precinct board during an election

Making Up Missed Work

Students with excused absences will be given the opportunity to complete missed assignments and assessments within a reasonable timeframe. Upon satisfactory completion, students will receive full credit for the work. Teachers will determine appropriate make-up assignments that are reasonably equivalent to the work missed.

Parent/Guardian Responsibility

Parents and guardians are responsible for reporting student absences in a timely manner. Please contact the Attendance Office within 10 school days of the absence to provide verification. Absences that are not verified within this timeframe will be recorded as unexcused/truancy absences.

Religious Observances

Students may be excused to participate in religious exercises or receive religious instruction with written parent/guardian consent, provided they attend school for at least the minimum school day required for their grade level.

Students may be excused for religious purposes for up to four days per school month. These absences are considered authorized absences, and students are responsible for completing any missed work. Teachers will make every reasonable effort to support students in making up assignments, tests, and other class activities missed during these absences.

Thank you for partnering with us to ensure your child attends school regularly and is set up for success. Every day matters, and we appreciate your support in helping your student be present, engaged, and ready to learn.
