Welcome to El Cerrito Middle School! We are a campus serving 6th -8th grade students and anticipate an increased enrollment exceeding 1,200 students. While we are one of the larger middle schools in CNUSD, we continue to explore ways to ensure the success of all our students by offering a variety of structures to support our students.
El Cerrito Middle School (ECMS) is committed to the academic and social success of all students by focusing on the CNUSD two pillar approach of academic rigor/relevance and social emotional learning. All ECMS students participate in the 4 core subjects (Language Arts, Math, Science, & History), Physical Education, an Elective course, and Success For School (5th period). We are proud to offer numerous elective courses for students to choose – Band, Orchestra, Spanish, Visual Art, Home Economics, Career Technical Education (CTE), Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Leadership, and Yearbook. In addition to these academic courses, students have the opportunity to participate in campus clubs (FBLA, LINNK, NJHS, and PAL) as well as a variety of after-school sports (basketball, cross country, track, and soccer).
To support all students, we also provide numerous support opportunities for our students: academic planners, intervention classes (Read 180, Math Academy, etc.), lunch academy, after-school study hall, academic Saturday school, as well as leadership and enrichment opportunities. We strive to offer numerous curricular and co-curricular programs to ensure our students will enjoy high school success and begin preparation for college and career.
The academic planner and the three-week progress reports are additional tools used to support student success. Students are required to write their daily class work and homework assignments in the planner, which is regularly checked by teachers and administrators. Teachers also use the planner as a communication tool with parents. We encourage parents to check the student planner and Parent Connect regularly. Every three weeks, 5th period teachers assist students in preparing an individualized “progress report” for each student, which should be taken home for parent review. This home-school communication, with the three-week progress reports and the academic planners, is a key element of student success. Of course, parents should contact their child’s teacher whenever they have a question or concern, or if they want to share things that are going well.
I encourage all students and parents to get involved in our school. For our students, consider joining a club or after-school sports team to enhance your middle school experience. I would encourage our parents to continue to actively participate in the education of your child by joining PTSA and/or participating in our school activities to support our students.
Our staff is committed to ensuring the success of our students. We look forward to having you and your student help us contribute to our future successes. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact myself or any of our fabulous staff members. Have a wonderful school year!
Sincerely,
